What causes arthritis in pets?

There are many reasons that can lead your pet to having arthritis. Old age is one of the main factors. All of the wear and tear, as well as any orthopedic injuries they may have sustained in the past can make them more vulnerable to arthritis. Pets who are overweight or obese are also prone to arthritis, as the excess weight inflicts added stress on their joints. Certain breeds and species are also more prone to arthritis (e.g. larger dog breeds).

How do I know if my pet has arthritis?

Changes in behaviour and movement are some of the earliest signs. You may notice that it takes longer for your pet to go up and down the stairs, they seem to be easily fatigued, they may wince when getting up or lying down, or that they may start to limp while they walk. Please call us right away if you see any of these signs. Regular checkups are important so we can diagnose the condition early on and proceed with the best ways to support your pet.

How is arthritis treated in pets?

Treatments will depend on the specific type of arthritis your pet has, disease progression, and any pre-existing conditions your pet is dealing with.
