Ultrasounds and X-rays are essential tools in veterinary medicine allowing us to diagnose a multitude of health conditions in our loyal companions. If you have any questions about these tools, please give us a call at 807-939-2616.
Not at all. These diagnostic tools are non-invasive and 100% pain free. We provide protective gear for our patients (and staff) during X-rays to protect against the small amount of radiation. Now, your pet may feel a slight discomfort if they have to be placed in an awkward position to scan the specific area in question. Most pets are fine with this, but if your pet is anxious or does not like to be held down, we can sedate them during their scan. This is a very rare occurrence though and most pets get their scan while they are awake.
X-rays are typically used to examine harder structures in your pet’s body such as their bones and ligaments. Ultrasounds, on the other hand, are usually used to examine softer tissue organs like the heart, stomach and lungs. They provide real-time feeds of the movement within your pet’s organs and other functions like blood flow. Ultrasounds and X-rays are often used together, depending on the patient’s case.
