Common practice is for puppies to get their initial set of vaccines at 6 to 8-weeks-old. They will need to return to the vet once every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 16-weeks-old to complete their puppy series of vaccinations.
Vaccines fall into two main categories: core and non-core. Core vaccines are considered mandatory for all dogs. Some, like the rabies vaccine, are even mandated by law. Canine distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis are examples of core vaccines. Non-core vaccines are optional and recommended by the vet based on your lifestyle and environment. Those that protect against kennel cough and Lyme disease are examples of non-core vaccines.
Dogs should receive vaccines throughout their life. Some are administered once every year, while others are given once every 3 years. Senior aged pets should continue receiving their vaccines.
